The Functions of an Usher
The unpardonable sin of a church usher is inattention.  Signals and communications are missed, people's needs are ignored, and the quality of an usher's effectiveness drops to zero when his or hers wanders.
Paul's admonition in Colossians 3:23-24 includes ushers: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord....it is the Lord Christ you are serving."

The Main Area of Concentration - Concentrate on the People

Since most people tend to sit in the same place week after week, ushers should memorize regular attendees' usual places.  Prompt, direct seating of people in their usual places is an indication of the user's awareness.  Seating visitors next to regular churchgoers with a word of introduction is helpful to new people.  Awareness of empty seats in this general seating pattern comes only by concentration.  If ushers were ranked like people in the military, a promotion should be given to every usher who learns to concentrate on people's names.
